You make the difference
The population has grown rapidly over the past 60 years, demographics have changed, people and community needs have increased and newly developed needs have risen throughout the years. Volunteers are now assisting in areas that historically were only considered for paid workers. However, government, non-government and non-profit organisations across all sectors are utilising volunteer workers, within sporting/recreational, schools, aged care, disability, all 3 levels of government, youth, child care, counselling, family & individual programs, etc.
Without volunteers all of these sectors would suffer, imagine if there were no sporting games for children/youths/adults to participate in, the effects that it would have on their overall well being, the pressures that would be placed back onto families.
Imagine councils were unable to access volunteers for their environmental programs; schools rely on volunteers for tuckshops, fundraising, reader support, brekkie programs. Let’s not forget one of the fastest growing areas, aged care and disability sector, can you imagine no meals on wheels, respite services, in-home library and social support services and they certainly rely heavily on volunteers. The community would be in crisis, not to mention families and individuals would suffer far more health issues and increased financial responsibility back onto federal, state and local governments.
Recognising the impact that volunteering has in the world, the word Volunteer has become an accomplished role in society. Volunteering is a highly respected and valued contribution to society and with this great appreciation for volunteers, each year Australia celebrates volunteers through National Volunteer Week. Globally we celebrate volunteers through International Volunteer’s Day and this occurs year after year because volunteers make a difference.
